Maintenance BOMs contain information about what spare parts are used to maintain different types of assets within your facilities. Here are several reasons as to why maintenance BOMs need to be accurate.

Inaccurate BOMs can cause workers to either order incorrect parts or the incorrect quantity of parts. As a result, they will eventually have to reorder parts and not only waste money, but waste time waiting for parts to arrive while delaying maintenance. If by chance these incorrect parts do happen to be used during maintenance, it can lead to disruptions or equipment failure which leads to even more downtime and costs. One component of a maintenance BOM includes the cost of materials required to maintain any particular asset. If the cost to purchase a spare part is wrong and underestimated according to the BOM, then a purchase order has the potential to exceed the budget that the company had planned for it. This can especially be an issue if spare parts are ordered in bulk with the presumption that the cost listed on the BOM is accurate.
