Asset Hierarchy Challenges in Your EAM/CMMS Solutions 2

Difficulty Finding Objects in the Hierarchy  

Have you ever had difficulties finding locations or assets in your asset hierarchy? An asset hierarchy with no set structure will make it difficult for you to find specific equipment if similar objects are found in different places and branches of the hierarchy. For example, the same pump in different parts of a plant should be found in the same levels and locations in the hierarchy. In SAP, Maximo, and other EAM/CMMS solutions, there is no clear way to visualize the hierarchy so it’s difficult to tell how long it will take to locate assets. 

Consistency Issues 

Another common problem we see is that the assets included within the hierarchy are inconsistently organized. Since most standardized EAM/CMMS solutions do not include a way for you to visualize your hierarchy, there is no way to ensure that asset hierarchy rules are constantly being followed even if you try your best to maintain the hierarchy. If you do not follow a standard or guideline, there is also no way to ensure that the same amount of data is collected for all parts of the hierarchy.

Reliance on IT Resources 

Since the most common EAM/CMMS solutions are designed to be systems that generate work orders, they are not equipped with the ability to automatically generate useful reports on the consistency and completeness of location and equipment master data. The reports must be generated by IT resources. It can also be difficult for users without any experience to navigate the asset management system. This creates a reliance on IT resources to report on and change EAM master data for conformance.
