Is your company dealing with poor data? Don’t worry, you can cleanse your data! We know that poor data can drastically increase your companies’ maintenance costs. It can also tremendously affect your organization when your company experiences unexpected downtime at critical times. Your poor data also decreases maintenance productivity, as well as exposes your company to EH&S risks. You lose time searching for information, when your company has poor data, and you may have duplicate parts in your system that are useless.

Now, we said that poor data is fixable, and it is! It’s quite easy as well.  Let’s look at the 4 best practices for fixing poor data:

  1. Prioritize Data

A rule of thumb is to focus on the problems that have the largest impact on revenue and expenses. You can’t expect to fix everything all at once. You must be able to prioritize what data needs to be fixed first. Start with solving the problems that’ll increase production which will help your organization achieve the greatest ROI. That way, you can test your results, measure the ROI and evaluate which subsystems will provide the greatest ROI and use this process on all similar subsystems.

  1. Measure Progress

When measuring the progress of your data cleanse, be sure to remain focused on your ROI-based business objective. Remember what your company is trying to accomplish and how your EAM system can be used to make this happen. Make sure that you are also designing KPIs around master data completeness, accuracy, and suitability that are in accordance with achieving your desired objectives.

  1. Adopt and Set Standards

Your company’s standards should be properly documented and always readily available. Most businesses struggle to adopt effective standards for their master data. It is best if your organization adopts a standard that is agreed by the entire organization so that implementation is easier. The standard should be suitable and flexible for all stakeholders to implement as well.

  1. Oversee the Project

While attempting to cleanse your data, you want to be able to oversee the entire project. To do this, use a staging area that allows you to easily find, search, filter and visualize your data. Allow a wide range of stakeholders to view, comment on, and approve work-in-progresses so that the entire organization understands the status of the project.

If you follow these steps, you’ll be able to successfully run a data cleansing project. Want to learn more about how to cleanse your data? Download our whitepaper here!
